The Miao People of China
Around 1,300 years ago, the Miao people fled the devastation of war in northern China, seeking refuge in the southern, remote mountainous regions of Guizhou after being defeated by the Tang Dynasty. Their arduous journey to safety was characterized as herculean due to the difficulties and dangers they faced while settling in the high mountains during a time when tigers and wolves were common. As they established themselves in various regions, the Miao began to create distinct groups, each cultivating its own rich culture and traditions. With around 120 subgroups, their shared experiences shaped strong ties within their communities, often marrying within their own circles to preserve their unique heritage.
